Introduction to E-TRAN
Users of EMT (Electromagnetic Transients) simulation programs (such as PSCAD/EMTDC) often face difficulties in obtaining data and developing cases suitable for their studies. Many utilities have the data available for their entire system in loadflow programs, but a great deal of effort is required to re-enter the network data for use in EMT programs.
Three common challenges which must be overcome are:
Translation of circuit/network data (differences in PU systems, data entry...).
The generation of network equivalents.
Initialization of machine, generators or sources in large inter-connected networks.
We have developed the E-TRAN translator in house to automate the processes that we had to repeat for each new study we performed for our customers. The use of E-TRAN has not only saved us considerable time and effort while performing studies for clients, but it has given us additional confidence in our study results.
E-Tran can:
Translate PSS/E .raw files into fully initialized PSCAD files
Generate excellent network equivalents
Correctly initialize components to loadflow steady state values
Provide capability for a substitution library, allowing the user to use their detailed models in place of simple loadflow data
